Default error code p0420 and whining

When i got my 3.3 2003 limited xs it has a whining, which got higher the faster then engine revved--but it didn't really bother me--but got the engine management light on today--and got the code p0420--

now done some searching and its to do with emmision or fumes or cat etc...now i have also found this.....

Had the same problem took forever to find where the whinning was coming from. Look under the middle of the car while running and listen for a whine while someone else eccelrates it. There is a plastic 3 ball looking thing that has a vacumm in it that helps with pressure. Mine was shrunken from heat and therefore leaked its called a Vac Harness and it was 8.00 from the dealer. part # was 4431325 hope this helps good luck.

Im no expert but they could be linked? any one else have any ideas?

I have just been reading the chrysler forum for p0420 codes....now my car has covered 180000 miles, but the car is runnig fine, except the engine managemnet light, and the p0420 code. Is hard to change the 02 sensors, should i start here?

If its the sensor for the cat, where is this on my car? - as the "heat sheild" on the top of my manifold where it meets the engine has all burnt/rusted off...is the cat sensor in there or further along the pipe---if its no where near i'm sorry!!

ok thankyou, i only got the 420 code. thanks for that. i'll get the code read properly.

thanks again

Also--i was going to get someone round before i read the code, but then thought i didn't need him. He's code machine will not only get the 420 code it will also be able to tell me what is the "actual" problem...is this correct?
