Cool Full service sir?💋

Hi guys...

I have a UK 2.8L GV that I want to change the engine oil and filter on! Plus the glow plugs. When I bought the car used, there wasn't an owners hand book so not sure of the spec! But I know it's a 5w-30 grade. I was thinking of using Mobil 1 0w-40 as the Mobil has a high TBN and flash point! Does anyone know if this is okay for these VM engines or is it better to keep to 5w-30?

I've bought the glow plugs but not sure how difficult they are to get to and I don't want them to snap when removing them. I've heard off other forums that that can stick in the head due to carbon build up?...

The car has always been run on Shell V-Power (GTL) derv in a hope that it might get rid of some carbon build up

Any help would be very welcomed guys

Cheers

I wouldn't change the glow-plugs unless there's starting problems in very cold weather. Direct injection diesels like these are easy-start. It was the old indirect ones that could be a pig to start. Every glow-plug had to work, otherwise frustration. Keep your new glow-plugs to hand just in case.

You'll not find any advantage in using any other oil than specified. Proper PAO* synthetic is best.

I've tested BP's version of diesel with an injector cleaner added by the makers. I found it made no noticeable difference to anything. And it cost 40p per gallonUK more.

Leedsman.

* PAO = Poly Alpha Olefin. There is a cheaper version which is hydrocracked. Chief advantge of synthetic is twice the life, and a lot less thinning out with high temps. This is why synth. is used for jet engines since the 1960s. Invented by the Germans during the second world war as it was hard for them to get mineral.

Hiya mate 👍

Many thanks for the reply to both my questions. Like you I'm very much into the specs of oils having used VW 507 00 specs in my Polo TDi and C2 (Low ash) in my Toyota T-180 oil burner. I use motul 100% ester or double ester oils if I get them for the right price. The last oil and filter change o. The van was Motul 5w-30 with some Archoil 9200 if I've remembered the number correctly!.

I've got over 50L of Mobil 1 and Castrol edge in the garage! That needs to be used! The Mobil is a 0-40 and the the Edge is 5-30! I know the Castrol is a cracked hydro-carbon! But the Mobil (According to Guy) from Opie oils is a true synth. The Mobil in the U.S is cracked for some reason?!!!

Mobil 1 has a high TBN (Total Base Number) of about 12 compaired to Edge of about 7. What I was looking for was the API number ect to see what would be best for these VM Motori marine diesels?

I didn't know that the Germans invented synth during WW11 and its been used in jets from that far back! Very interesting indeed! I'd look it up some more but my laptop has died and I'm doing everything on my iPhone! 😳 Very hard on the eye 👓

Next job is an EGR valve clean or buy a new one for Ł170! Have you done one on yours yet pal? 😎😊

Mobil--1 may well be different in the US vs. UK, as american laws re. description of product aren't the same.
I would advise the use of synth. in any engine with a turbocharger, as these being exhaust driven can get red-hot under long heavy load. Some turbos even have their own cooler. Of course if you don't drive or have to drive like that it's not going to be a problem. This doesn't apply to superchargers as most of them are belt driven and give you MAJOR oomph as soon as you even twitch on the go pedal. Try and get a ride in an S-Type R Jag. with the 4.2ltr. supercharged engine -- smiley face guaranteed.

I owned an XJ type R back in the day with the 400bhp lump! Always brought a smile to me face! But I use to 😭 at the petrol station! 😅
