Default GRAND VOYAGER GROWLING

hi can anybody help me i have a grand voyager 3.3 limited on a 51/2001 plate:

when the engine is started it(ON OCASSIONS)makes a whining growling sound.
no warning lights etc come on neither does it run hot. infact is a brilliant runner.
the sound does not run for longer than 5/7 seconds but is quite loud.
does not sound like fanbelt slip. and does not result in any flashing lights on the dash?

any ideas?

can anyone help or advise me.

THANKS CRAIG THE BRITISH GUY.

My guess would be a/c compressor or clutch.

Hi
Pull on the belt and just make sure the auto belt tensioner is moving ok (not sticking) and is inline with the belt. Could well be the tensioner and it's belt noise (I know you said it does't sound like belt noise but is good to check) could even be the idle pulley. Is the noise coming from the belt end? or could it be the starter motor?

I have the same problem, only happens when its cold... I've replaced the steering pump, idler pully tensioner pully, and alternator. still trying to narrow this problem down.

yup i replaced the belt twice (different brands and qualities) to fix this.
far as i can tell its got to be either the ac compressor clutch bearing, the water pump or something internal. bought an ac clutch and am going to try that, any other help would be great.

i would first remove the belt and spin everything to see if anything is rough.

i would remove the belt then start it up. obviously don't run it for to long. if the growling is not heard then ur problem is in the accessory drive belt somewhere. if it still does it i would start looking at the starter. i've seen starters stick and they make a growling noise when still engaged while the engine is running.

Hi, thanks to all that are trying to help me. heres the latest update.... I removed the belt and started it, no noise! then I replaced the ac clutch assy. still growling, then I just replaced the water pump (the only thing driven by the belt that I haven't replaced yet)... guess what, STILL GROWLING!!!!! I'm back to te power steering pump. is there any kind of check valve in the steering sytem that might fail, and let air back into system? when i changed the pump the first time, i turned the wheel lock to lock multiple times to bleed the system, is there anything more i can do to make sure there is no air in the fluid? thanks again to all those thatare trying to help me.
