Default Oil Leak Help 2.8 crd

Ive been noticing oil on the driveway, just a few drips. So I removed the undertray and gave the underside of the engine a clean and left it running for a little while. Picture here...

Having read a few threads, im thinking its the rear crankshaft oil seal.
How easy is it to drop the gearbox?

Looks like your right on the rear seal issue, unless there's something in there also likely to leak.
But by look of it you can't remove anything to check or can you.
These kind of jobs are normally done by garages due to lifting issues but might be someone out there.
Pity you weren't due a clutch change, but get it done if you go the rear seal change.
There has been some other threads on this oil leak problem wonder how they solved it.
How about trying the stuff that you put in the oil to swell the seals.
Good luck and I'm sure you will post the result.

I cant seem to find out much information, but I found this link
http://www.justanswer.com/chrysler/5...oyager-03.html
suggesting that it can be repair via the sump.
I want to avoid dropping the gearbox :-)

Hi travelmad

This is a long shot. Are you certain its not coming from a leaking oil filter seal? The only reason I mention it is that twice I've had oil spots on the drive way. Once the oil filter had worked slightly loose and the second time there was a slight flaw on the rubber seal.
The oil had run to lots of different places and collected in the nooks and crannies, was hard to see where it had come from originally.

just worth a shot, goodluck with it.

See here from a post last May, check, and eliminate the easy things first.

- have you checked the spin~on oil filter can ?
- they sometimes rotate loose / not tightened by the junior who did the service
- that, if loose, would look like an end float bearing leaking when it isn't
- that also would drip right on to that cross member, just stick your hand in an try to tighten it up !

Hi Rodger,

If only....
I had a good look around and gave the underside a good clean and waited for the drip. The oil filter and oil cooler are bone try, and theres nothing else from the top. There was nothing running down the back, so i am pretty confident that its the rear crankshaft oil seal. Can pick up a set of seals for £50 but the book says that the engine or the transmission has to be removed.
I might ask my local garage to quote or wait until the weather improves a bit....
Cheers

Default Oil Drip.

Taxi garages are well known for working on this engine, ask them about the sump renewal method as the seal would need to be a split design to fit over crankshaft. While your there get a quote from them.
Interesting thread this, where an oil drip could possibly cost hundreds. I'd do clutch as well as its coming off anyway.
Come to think of it if my clutch does go I'll get seal changed, just in case.
Good Luck...

Sorry, been on 12 hr night shifts, so theres been no progress.
I asked my local garage, who said it would be 4 hrs work providing no other issues
So thats £240 inc vat. Plus the seals, approx £50.
If I can get the time, I wouldnt mind do it myself, plus im moving house next month to house with a garage with an inspection Pit. :-)
