Default Questions about rear A/C & fan

Hi folks. First time poster here so forgive me if I breach any rules or anything!

Our 2006 T&C has developed a leak somewhere in or around the rear A/C evaporator. I've got some questions about it.

1. When the switch on the dash for the rear unit is turned to "fan" does that engage the rear a/c evaporator? Or does it only turn on when I turn the fan to the right position(s)?
2. My mechanic tells me it could be as much as $900 to replace that rear a/c evaporator. And it could stil be several hundred or more just to fix the line(s) if that is where the leak is. Sound right?

Thanks in advance.

the evaporator is a non moving part it has freon that flows through it the same time the front does. The fan only moves the air across it and as for a leak it all depends on where it is at and what needs to be fixed or replaced.

So what is the difference between the one left dial position that says "fan" and graduated positions to the right?

Thanks for your timely response too by the way!

The first position is to give control of the rear HVAC to the control unit in the back.....or "ON" The rest of the positions are you overiding their control...low/medium/high.
