Default Replacing turbo

My mechanic has cleaned egr but the car is still smoking and he said turbo is leaking and something about a leak. He reckons turbo needs replaced. Now the car accelerates fine and stuff. Does this sound right

Is replacing the turbo easy and can I do it myself? How many hours woukd a mechanic need or how much wouldnit cost. He says he is too busy to do it now? I m thinking of getting second hand one. Really at my wits end

Is car accelerating ok with no cut in power or shutting down on overtaking/booting it. If yes your turbo is ok. This smoking refers to unburn fuel in exhaust probably due to dribbling injector/s. He maybe thinks Turbo has oil leak at seals and that's the smoke. Check intercooler pipework and hoses for oil inside to confirm this. The job obviously involves getting down back of engine and access from underneath. Removing wiper scuttle would be required but easy enough. Only problem is possibility of sheared studs. Good Luck...

Sheared studs holding turbo to rest of exhaust system. These studs just don't like heat like all exhaust systems.

Thanks. So in your opinion if car is accelerating fine its unlikely the turbo needs replaced

I'd say its ok. But your mechanic has dowt's about the turbo seals. Is there oil in the boost pipework and intercooler. Are you using oil. Does it accelerate to overtake ok, like booting it, if yes its good with no fuel pressure issues. Got to clarify with your mechanic.
Oh and read not long ago that oil inside the intercooler, on the pipework, lowers its efficiency to cool the air. Sounds logical but never thought of for power loss..
