Default Stinky air!

When we turn on the heater in our 2000 T&C the air coming out of the vents smells to high heaven. The previous owner must have smoked. Can anything be done to clear this up? Thanks in advance.

Is it a smokey smell or a musty smell? If it is more musty, you may have a clogged HVAC drain. If the drain gets clogged, water from condensation will settle and get moldy, giving a wonderful musty aroma whenever the blower fan is running. If it is from smoking, unless the vent was used for an ashtray, I think that the smell would disapate because being all plastic ductwork, I do no think it would hold the smokey odors.

The weird thing is that it doesn't stink when the a/c is on, only when the heater is on.

This might be worth something, my brother had a similar problem with a 92 caravan.
They found a pinhole leak in the heater core and he was smelling hot antifreeze.
At least that is how the story went. Proper repairs were done and the smell disappeared.
