Default strange fuel issues

Hi Im from the uk and theres not a lot of info here so hope you can help

I have a 2.8 crd 2007 with the erg valve at the front of the engine

The issue I have is , it will only start when you prime the fuel filter
up to a hard pressure
Once this is done the car runs great with no cutting out
I have replaced the filter housing and to my surprise there is no lift
pump in the tank
so im guessing the hp pump does all the work ,

My queston is does the hp pump pull the fuel up and if it does is it the same pump used on the cars with a lift pump in the tank

Could my pump have the sucking side of it down

thanks dave

I think I have the same problem I searched my a$$ off trying to find the pump but I found it...
Its in the waterseparator housing next to the tank..
My symptoms: car starting badly after some idle time, otherwise runs and starts perfectly.. Probably due to returnflow fuel through leaks in the pump or something.
Im searching for a new housing right now
