Whirring sound whilst driving, now no start
Hi Guys
My 2.5CRD only just fired up this morning, noticed a whirring sound whilst driving to work and also most of the dashboard light looked very dim.
Parked up and tried to re-start when i got to work and nothing, the engine wont even turn. Does this sound like the alternator? Battery is less than 12 months old.
Very sudden as there has been no real signs of building up to this, the cold weather obviously has some sort of effect.
Cheers

Sounds like an electrical power problem and the whirring sound looks like a serpentine belt or a bad bearing in the alternator.
I would:
*measure the power on your battery in rest (should be >12.x V) If lower the battery is maybe broken or just empty because not loaded by alternator
*start the car with help of cables
*measure the power on the battery poles with running engine (should be >13.x V)
if >13.x V your alternator is fine and the problem lays elsewhere (maybe bad battery)
if <13.x V your battery does not receive enough power from alternator and you should check the belt and/or the alternator itself.
My best guess would be a bad alternator maybe carbon brushes, but with the sound I would say replace it together with the belt.
