Default woman in need of help!!!

I recently bought a 97 Breeeze, and the guy said the engine light will come on and go back off. His "mechanic" said that it was an air lock in the gas tank. Can you please tell me what the black plastic compartment is beside the exhaust manifold with the words " multi-port injection" on it?
There is a crack on the bottom of this, could this be why my check engine light won't turn off now? Is this an easy fix? Do you just disconnect the rubber tubes from it and take the bolt off and pull it out an dreplace it or can i just seal the crack?

Thanks
Nicole

I can't get the code because the odometer light kicks off and on to - haven't gotten it to come back on for a few days. The car ran fine for the first few days, than it started to smell funny and the check engine light came on. today i noticed the box with multi-port injection on it has duct tape across the bottom of it......covering a crack or hole. we are almost positive that this is the issue, everything on the car is solid and clean except for this box.
