Unhappy 02 T&C Heating issue

Hey all

So when I leave the van at idle and not go anywhere it will heat up and needle of the temp goes to middle. almost middle, however I start smelling coolant a little. the hose from the radiator to the thermostat is extremely hard and tight like its about to explode. the radiator is brand new and so is the thermostat. now.. when I drive it (no stop and go traffix, just driving) the temp gauge will go down (at least in this cold weather) and the van wont heat up.. any suggestions?? please help!

I will get that checked. but why would my hose be extremely hard on press? pressurized like. shouldnt it be able to be squeeze and the coolant just go to the bottle? at least is what im thinking.

IF its after driven no it will have 10-15 lbs of pressure in the system normal it will go in to the over flow when the pressure inside the system is greater then the radiator caps pressure spring.
