Default 1962 Newport backfire

HELP!! I have a '62 Newport, 361 2bbl. It sputters intermittantly after it warms up and also when hot. During the sputtering session, it will back fire on acceleration. Is this fuel, vacuum, timing, ?? All joses are connected, and all looks well. This just started after owning the car for 3 months with no probs. Also, the fuel in the clear filter is clean...HELP![:@]

Default RE: 1962 Newport backfire

moe in wichita. check dist cap, rotor, order of spark plug wires look closely at #5 and#7 these two are easy to get swaped.also check for a vacuumn leek in the intake system. also check fuel pump output. years ago i stopped useing mech fuel pumps, andwentto electric pump on engines with carbuators. mount it in the back anddont use a mech pump. also check the hose that goes on the suction side of the fuel pump, a small crack will let the pump pull air insted of fuel. any pump will suck air easyer than fuild, so the smalest opening will let in air before it will pullfuilds. one time i had the same trouble on 65 300L. turned out the steel tube inside the front frame had a small hole from rust, inside the frame. your newport is kind of the same body
