Make sure the radiator has free air flow. Remove leaves, bugs and debris that may be clogging it.
You don't say how old this thing is but the cooling system may also be clogged up internally. You might want to try flushing the cooling system to clean it out. Be careful if you use one of those flush kits that allow you to attach a garden hose to the cooling system. City water pressure is MUCH higher than the cooling system is designed to hold so you can blow seals and wreck the water pump if you apply too much pressure.
Make sure you are using the proper anti-freeze at the correct dilution.
If you are hauling a heavy load at high speed up hill, it should not be too surprising that the needle creeps up a bit.
