Default 95 LHS overheating

I just purchased a 95 Chrysler LHS. Everything works great on it except that the temperature frequently goes close to the red. I have changed the thermostat and I am not losing any coolant. It has not actually boiled over but when it gets close to the red on the gauge, I turn on the heater and the temperature drops. All of my trips have been short so far, 20 minutes or less. Does anyone have any ides as to what the problem could be. Thanks.

Have you checked to see if the rad fan comes on?

Yes, both fans run once it gets hot. I have let the car idle for 45 minutes and the gauge did not go past the halfway point. But as soon as I drive it, it starts to get hot. If I turn the heat on high, the temperature gauge drops some. Please someone help!
