Default camshaft timing gear

Hi I am fairly new here. Haven't posted anything, but I have visited a few times since I signed up. My question or problem depending on how you look at it, is this. I am in the process of replacing the seal in the oil pump on a 1996 Sebring. Anyway, after heating up the gear to get it back on and letting it cool down before I put the timing belt, I noticed that the key had come off of the camshaft. Now I can't get the gear back off to put the key on. I think that it contracted down so much that it has now formed around the camshaft and won't move. Has anyone ever had this happen? And should I try to run it without the key?
