2000 Sebring Conv. - Run Rough when hot.
Hello - I have an odd issue with my Sebring. Starts & Runs beautiful when cold. No knocking / smooth idle / No valve clatter etc.
But when engine gets hot I get mild valve clatter on acceleration / rough low idle, stalling. I've replaced Plugs / Wires / CPS & Distributor. If I let engine cool and runs fine again. I checked timing Belt and it appears fine. Not sure what to look for next. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks |
I will assume you have the 2.5 mitsubishi V6 under the hood? When posting of driveability concerns it would be helpful to know just what motor is being questioned of.
IF so at 18 years of age, have you replaced the fuel filter yet? Should be underneath the car, just ahead of the passenger rear wheel. Another possibility to investigate is the EGR valve possibly hanging open when it should be closed. The clatter you hear MAY be caused by extreme LEAN running conditions as to why my 2 suggestions. Looking forward to hearing back from you ! |
Thanks for the suggestions. I will check it out and let you know how I make out.

STILL STUGGLING WITH THIS ISSUE. My 2000 Sebring with the 2.5 Mitsubishi Engine. 140k miles. I've replaced the following parts - Valve cover gaskets / Plugs / Wires / Distributor / EGR Valve & Crank position sensor. I've actually replaced distributor twice. Second distributor is a Cardone Select.
The car starts & runs perfect when cold. Smooth idle , No skip's. Once engine comes to temperature 180-195 degrees, the engine begins to run rough. (Engine misfire) However, I have No codes & No Engine lights. The rough idle progressively gets worse eventually leading to a stall. After stalling engine is very hard to restart. If I let Engine cool for 30-45min. it will start fine. Smooth idle etc. I've used an electric cleaner to clean all connections. I'm at a loss. Suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks |
