2019 Ram 1500 Limited - Will not move in Drive
I have a 2019 Ram with less than 1,000 miles, and on 5 different occasions, the truck will not move when I put it in drive. The dealer can not replicate the problem since it happens randomly. There has been 2 failed attempts to fix the problem. Going in for a 3rd time to tmrw. Here is a video of what I am experiencing:

Disappointed is an understatement.
Lydia,
Thanks for your note. The short answer is simply no explanation at all has been given. They thought it was electronic at first, but their reset did nothing. The dealer is In Norristown PA. Their website: norristownchryslerdodge.com. The owner is Ross Choate and we have been in communication, however he said “We have to duplicate it to try to be able to diagnose it.” I stand here simply in shock over this whole situation. The vehicle was towed to the dealer the first time because it would not go into drive and you saw the video of the last time it did not engage in drive. I don’t understand why the dealer or chrysler won’t step up to take care of this before I go to the BBB and/or file a law suit. Any assistance would certainly be appreciated. |

Same thing - I’ve had the truck 1 week
Hi, Same exact thing has been happening to us, I’ve had the truck 1 week and 100 miles - took to dealer yesterday and they thought it was a update but today same thing happend again! |
Same exact thing happened me yesterday. Just bought my 2019 Ram 1500 Laramie 4x4 less than a week ago. 200 miles on the truck. I shut the truck off like he did in the video. Restarted it and put it in drive. Tapped the gas and it jumped in gear. Did not like the sound or feel of it. When will there be a fix for this? Seems there have been plenty of complaints about this same problem already. |
2019 ram 1500 won’t move in drive !
Hi all , The same thing has happened to me twice ! Two weeks ago 600 miles , jumped in at lumber yard put in drive nothing ,nothing , stepping on gas motor wouldn’t rev just acted like it was being held back ! Checked parking brake put back in park tried again , finally after sitting there looking like an idiot it slammed into gear and made a not good sound ! Same thing today at the ATM put it in park , did my business , put it in gear and nothing ! Nothing ! Just like it was chained to a wall !! Finally it slammed into gear again ! Making the same nasty sound ! I would like to drive it off a cliff !!!!! I think we’re all screwed ! I’m a farm boy grew up driving and fixing big equipment! And I guess I’m not smart enough to drive a 50k pick up truck ! Very depressing! Hope they find the fix before everyone wrecks the transmissions ! I would never abuse a vehicle to make it sound like that thing when it drops in gear !

2019 ram 1500 won’t move in drive
Also I forgot to mention, I’m not a Ram engineer, but I would take a hard look at that electric shift solenoid on these transmissions ! They obviously aren’t strong enough to pull the gear out of park ! It’s just like when your in 4 low and it won’t come out until you go to neutral and get the pressure off the gears !

2019 ram 1500 won’t move in drive !
Hi Jasmine , Thanks for reply , please send a link to contact you directly. I don’t see anyway to do that .
Well it needs to be fixed , however if they can’t duplicate it they are not gonna do anything about it anyways . I’m not thrilled about someone trying to get my truck to slam into gear so they can try to fix it , until they know what’s causing this and put out a service bulletin it won’t get fixed ! I’ve seen were others have numerous trips to dealer and not resolved , it’s happened twice in last 2 weeks with less than 900 miles on it , so I can’t just let them drive it for 2 weeks to hear it do it . Yesterday I was trapped at an ATM ! Couldn’t move truck couldn’t get my door open to get out ! People beeping at me what a joke ! And you can read my comments on ram5thgen forum about my radio blasting my ear drums out ! Or it has no volume at all! I hate my new truck ! Good job Ram ! |

Same Thing is happening to me!
I picked up my new 2019 Bighorn from the dealer two weeks ago, this has happened at least 4 times already. I put it in drive and nothing happens. Very disappointed, this is deff a safety concern and needs to be figured out immediately.
-Mike W |
Hi mike ,
Yes I agree , a real safety concern , not to mention I can’t let my family members drive it ! Not that they even would now knowing about all the problems it has ! Very disappointed! Mine is at dealer right now , nothing will change ! Just a big inconvenience and nothing to drive now , when the gears fall out on the ground then they’ll prob be able to fix it ! There answer to everything is that they will flash the computer, yeh that’s not it !!! Anyways good luck with yours I’ll keep posted of any updates ! |

Same here
Just picked up a 2019 Laramie 1500 a week ago and have had the same thing happen 3 times now, now that I am seeing it is a common issue I will be contacting the dealership when service is open.
|
I just got my 2019 Ram 1500 express, this has happened about 12 times now. Took it to the dealer to no avail and a somewhat flippant " we are not finding anything wrong, are you sure you are using the dial correctly" ( never mind this is my 3rd ram). Wondering what "additional assistance" is to be offered, I just want the damn truck fixed. Scary when it " launches" into D, if you have the rpms up at all the truck lurches and sets you back in your seat. Very disappoiny=ted in my new rruck considering they can't even figure out what is going on- obviously I am not the only one this is happening too.

Update. I brought it to the dealership to have service take a look. After 2 hours of them diagnosing they informed me they believe they’v fixed the issue. ( a code error) ....
So excited to go home, I go out to my truck, start it up, put it in drive and.......nothing happens!!! Luckily, I was in the service departments parking lot so I called them and had the advisor come out and see for himself. Asked me to step on the accelerator a little, which just revs the rpms, then suddenly the gears caught and jolted the truck forward. He was shocked and said “let’s go get you a loaner, this won’t be an easy fix.” So here I am, after I custom ordered my Ram, driving around a loaner vehicle without any clue as to how long it will take to fix. Very disappointed, I haven’t even received my first bill and it’s out of service in the shop. |
This forum is horrible, how do you PM the idiots? I've sent messages , re posted here and no reply just " they are checking my post" before actually posting it. The dealership is clueless as to what to do, I am stuck with an unsafe NEW truck and none even replies or gets involved after showing " great concern", nice!
|
Yeh nobody cares ! Until we all bring trucks in with ruined transmissions! Then they’ll have to fix them , meanwhile we all drive around with unsafe vehicles ! We don’t even leave town with ours and I’m not letting anyone else in the family drive it ! Don’t want them getting hurt or stuck with it ! Guess what Ram ! If they won’t come out of park , they aren’t always gonna go into park ! That’ll be awesome when your truck rolls down a hill or thru your house in the driveway! Maybe you’ve heard of a recall ????

2019 Big Horn Classic... Same Issue!
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.chr...cf3505d197.jpg
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.chr...6446123dbf.jpg I bought my truck 4/13/2019, within two days of ownership my truck had this exact issue, would engage a drive gear. I brought it into the dealer and they couldn't replicate it after having it two days, so they sent me on my way. Thankfully a miracle happened, as the very next day I was in the dealer lot when it replicated the issue! I called my salesman over and he witnessed it happening first hand. So far I've "owned" the truck for 9 days, but the dealership has been in possession of it longer than me with no updates, concerns, or contact for me. The real icing on the cake is my clear coat / paint is PEELING on my driver's side door jam.... This is beyond frustrating. |
Yes it’s very frustrating! It’s sad that so many of these are having the same problem and all with low miles , I don’t even dare take mine more than a few miles away . So much for getting a new vehicle to travel with ! I see a couple people saying they are replacing there transmissions, so they will prob do that to yours .
Good luck and hopefully they get yours fixed up soon ! |
Thanks for the well wishes

Good luck and hopefully they get yours fixed up soon ! The worst part of the deal for me is that I bought this truck to be reliable... I work for a railroad that has me on call 24 hours a day, 6 days a week. If this truck fails me enroute to work, then I could be terminated. I sincerely doubt FCA will put food on my table if that happens. |

To Chrylser Cares. You all need to get rid of that rotary shifter or as we call it GRANNY KNOB.
You and other car manufacturers have had nothing but problems with it. There are problems with it going into PARK as well. They tried something similar in the 50s and got rid of it. Some things DO NOT NEED TO BE CHANGED. (Except that damned Pink Thingy) The standard shifter that has served you for decades should be brought back. I have a 2006 300 V8Hemi and a 2014 300C and wouldn't trade either of them for the new cars with those idiot Granny Knobs that are nothing but dangerous and a threat to safety. What moron thought those were a good idea???? With my 2006 (the best year for them as they were built by Mercedes) I can hit the brakes and downshift in less than 2 seconds. Can't even get to the Granny Knob that fast in an emergency. So I've test driven them and love all the bells and whistles but not that knob. Do get rid of it. Otherwise love the car. |
Same thing here
Just bough a 2019 ram big horn this week. Had the vehicle not move while putting it in drive while test driving it but assumed it was nothing. Like I had not closed the door properly or couldnt figure the parking break. It happened twice. I signed for the vehicle today and havnt even picked it up yet. I decided to search this and see what I was doing but turns out it's not me, it's the vehicle. Many others have had this issue it seems. Has Chrysler really not been able to figure out what's doing this, even months after people have been saying this? I had brought it up to the dealer and he said its that's weird and brushed it off. He probably really did think I just didnt know what I was doing and I'm not saying he would sell something that he knew was faulty but come on. Now what do I do? I signed for this vehicle. Dont even have it yet. Already stressing about it.

Nervous..this just happened to us!
My husband and I just purchased a 2019 Dodge Ram Laramie Longhorn edition and this same thing just happened to us. Very distressed to see this feedback in this forum. We are calling the dealer but has anyone had any success with their dealers ?
|
Same issue
I have had the same issue with my 2019 ram 1500, the first time it happened the first day of ownership. I took a video when it happened and it's been at the dealer twice, this last time they kept the truck for a week and they couldn't figure it out. After them seeing the video they blamed me and said I wasn't letting the engine sit for a minute or so. My truck has done this 7 times since I purchased it and it doesn't seem like it's going to get fixed, I will continue taking it to the dealer if this keeps happening, maybe they will get annoyed and actually fix it.

2019 Ram 1500 sport won't move in drive
2019 Ram 1500 Sport. Menzies Chrysler, Canada.
I have the same issue as Jaketerk. His video is spot on as to what happens. First time it happened was on the 3rd day of having it maybe had 200km on it. Most recently was Friday October 11th,2019. Stopped for gas and attempted several times switching from park to drive and back and forth starting over from shutting it off until it finally caught the gear hard throwing me into the steering wheel. It felt as if I had been rear ended. It was so hard I had to get out to make sure. Also to look under the truck to see if I broke something. Went straight to dealer and they said they have heard of this issue and its a software issue. They said there are updates they can do. It's going in tomorrow afternoon October 16th, 2019 so let's see what happens and if they actually resolve the problem. Wish me luck. |
Well, no luck.

So did you eventually end up getting your issues resolved? I'm just curious because I'm thinking of purchasing a new 2020 Ram 1500. If not then I would try to attempt to take it to another dealership and see what they have to say
|
I see a TSB for software update for a whole list of issues with the trans. The software came out in June of 2019

A solution I've found
Hello folks!
I drive a 2012 Camaro 1LT but my sister in law has a 2014 Ram 1500 Sport (5.7 V8) We found that it may be a sort of transmission lock (our best guess) Solution: Go to Reverse Gear Inch back just an inch in reverse (don't need to move much) Go to Drive Gear Car Moves! I hope this helps the RAM community as well as Fiat Chrysler The best of luck to all |
Same issue!!
|
I bought a new 2014 Ram with the 8 speed. Ever since I've owned it the vehicle has randomly not gone into gear.
Numerous trips to the dealer have never corrected the problem. My only solution when it happens is to raise the hood and disconnect the battery then re-connect it. The problem may re-occur the next week or not happen again for months. But I'm always aware that it could happen at any time. Because of this my wife refuses to take the truck if I'm not with her. Well after no issues for 6 months it happened again today....naturally the temperature is 15°. I'm done with this problem and will be looking for a new truck. I joined this site to be certain Dodge had solved this problem. Apparently not. While I like everything else about my Ram and would consider a new one this issue is a deal breaker. Sorry Ram....I'm heading out this weekend to find another truck but it will be a Silverado or F-150 |
