Default 2008 sebring 2.0l cdr diesel

my sebring hesitates on acceleration then for some reason it will clear itself for a few weeks and runs great then the problem returns, sometimes when i go up hill the power drops and i struggle to reach 40mph. I have the vw passat engine. any ideas what the problem is?

Engine management light comes on only after five or six attempts at turning engine on and of then will go of again after a couple of hours normal running also noticed sudden burst of high heat coming through heaters just before and after power loss

Following the principle of "going for the easy things first" I would clean the injectors using only Forte' diesel injector cleaner poured into the fuel filter (injector cleaner doesn't work just poured in the tank, at least it never has for me). This is the first thing a diesel mechanic would do. Cost £12 to £14 for a tin of Forte'. It may or may not work, but at least you've not spent much money, or wasted much time. And you'll have clean injectors.
After that you can go for fuel starvation, pumps sucking in air as well as fuel due to cracked parts in the fuel system. The last VAG diesel I did was a shim-tappet 5cyl in an Audi 100, I have no further in-depth knowlege for that engine.
