A/C compressor replace (or just the bearing)
Hello all
Thank you in advance for taking the time to help. It is highly needed and appreciated
I have a vibration+noise from the ac compressor. It is not the ac itself but the pulley(bearing).
Unfortunately in Canada the part is 1000$ + labour + tax and that's why i need to repair it myself... with your help, of course
Please tell me:
1. Changing only the bearing, is it doable?
if yes
2. Do i need to empty the cooling liquid(freon) in order to dismantle it?
3. Where can order the new bearing?
4. Is there any video out there that would show the procedure or help in any way?
I have a 2008 convertible Sebring 2.4L LX

I had the same issue with mine (older model, 2.7L engine)....
money was tight then, and so I just bypassed the compressor by installing
a shorter belt. Not sure how yours is set up, but I'd bet the same temporary solution can be done.
I removed the a/c clutch-pulley just to get more room to work, but left the
system intact until I can replace the compressor.
Most likely, there's a thread here that will give you more guidance if you go this route....also, check the Sebring Convertible Club website for help

Theoretically, it's possible to replace the clutch without opening the system, thus making it unnecessary to replace the refrigerant. You might not be able to find a clutch on the market, and some special tools are going to be required.
Alternatively, you can take it to an A/C repair shop and have them evacuate the system, then you could replace the entire compressor and clutch assembly, then take it back to the shop and have them properly refill the system. You might want to invest in a shop manual of some kind to see what the job entails and determine if you and your toolbox are up to it.
