Default timing chain rattle

Hi I have got a 2005 CGV Limited XS stow n go 3.3 V6 auto, 150,000 on the clock, My engine is running perfect but has a rattle, sounds like the timing chain (had the same prob on my 1998 Ford explorer), what I need to know is can they be done with the engine still in the car? also is a big job? ie: how many hours will it take and any tips to make it as easy as poss for me.
Thanks for all help
Jason

I have a service manual on disc in pdf format as that's the best you can get here in the uk, but it don't tell you much, not like the good old Chiltern book
