Default 2002 300m timing issues

Hello experts and good morning. Have a question concerning a 2002 300m I bought! I was bringing it home and it started to overheat. I immediately pulled it over, I had a master mechanic look at it and he said it appears someone put stop leak in the radiator. He said to either flush it out or replace the rad. I decided to put in a new rad and water pump, I had a "backyard mech" do the work! He got everything installed and asked me to start the car, it backfired, sputtered, he moved the cams and tried to move it back in time, had me try to start car again to no avail, he repeated this procedure a few times and now the motor is turning over very fast! Did he bend the valves or is it still just out of time? Thanks guys.

That's what I was afraid of, he said the stop leak caused the problem! Another mechanic said that was impossible... Thanks for your reply really appreciate it.
