Default IR Headphone Trouble

Hi All. I have a 2004 British registered Grand Voyager Limited XS ( I believe to be Town and Country ?). It has the overhead DVD with IR headphones. I have bought some extra headphones but have massive problems. I know how IR works but the system seems so flakey. The kids generally sit in the back but because they are lower down they just dont seem to pick up the signal or it continually goes off. If i sit on the second row (im 5ft 10) i dont pick up the signal either but do if i sit right up, almost out of my seat. Does anyone else have this problem and is it just a poor system ?? Can a IR booster be fitted or can the overhead IR transmitter be adjusted or even is just that i need expensive headphones with a 360 degrees receiver ( if their is such a thing ).
Any help with this would be great.
Thanks, Chris.
