Default 08 Convertible - "top" warning ding at random times

new to me 08 Sebring convertible, not sure which model, but it has the 2.4. I've been fixing small things here and there, but this one I can't seem to find on Google...

the top seems to work just fine 95% of the time. there are times when I have to manually close the trunk, but rarely. however, the dash dings and the word "top" is displayed randomly while driving. sometimes it dings once and is done, sometimes it will go on for a few minutes and then stop. it does it both with the top up or down, so it's hard to pin-point any certain cause or scenario.

what should I check first? is there a sensor in the trunk somewhere that maybe isn't always getting signal or something?

It sounds to be a sensor. The sensor that comes to mind is for the tonneau cover, the part extends from the trunk lid. There are 2 microswitches for the cover one for extended and one for retracted.

One suspected area is the wiring harness by the right trunk hinge; it is noted for broken wires. The sensor wires pass through this harness. I would suggest first unwrapping the harness. Check out this link, post 37
