Default 2004 engine speed sensor malfunctio

I have a 2004 sebring with the 2.7 DOHC engine. Engine light was on when I baught the car. I took it to autozone to have it scanned. It said the camshaft sensor was bad. while investigating the camshaft sensor found it to be unplugged. I put in a new sensor and Plugged it in! and the car wont start. I unplug it and it starts fine, but wont get over 3000 rpm. Doesnt miss just acts like a rev limiter kicks in. I plugged the sensor back in and had the code read again and it says engine speed sensor malfunction. Any idea what is going on here?

U might have gotten some one that put a new engine in it or replaced some stuff off a different 2.7 and they did not know what they were doing I see it quite often.

Is there any way to tell what the engine came out of? Like a seriel number on the engine so I can know what ECM I need to put in the car?
