2005 Sebring Oil Pan & Timing Cover Gaskets DIY Question
Hi all, I'm new to the forums here but have a DIY question for my wife's 2005 Sebring Limited with the 2.7L V6 engine. I hope this is the right place to post but if not, my apologies to the admins and feel free to move this thread.
The initial issue was recurring oil spots on the garage floor in several places. I jacked up the car to take a look and noticed everything was pretty slick with oil all around the oil pan. It was time for an oil change anyways, so I pulled the pan down (a process in itself!) and was all set to replace that gasket. When loosening the two 10mm bolts on the passenger side that hold the bottom of the timing cover to the oil pan, the bottom left bolt hole bracket sheared off--uh oh...
Then, I noticed too that the bottom of the timing cover gasket had been pushed upwards and inwards to now be horizontal:
So, my DIY questions are:
1. Is it possible (or advisable) to simply bend the bottom of the timing chain cover gasket back into place and seal with silicone, rather than replace the whole gasket?
2. Is it possible (or advisable) to re-secure the existing timing chain cover with only the one bottom bolt (torqued properly) and seal the bottom sheared off part with silicone, rather than replace the whole timing chain cover?
If the answer to both questions is "No" (or "hell no!"), that's fine--I'd just put the oil pan back up with a couple bolts and have the car towed to my local shop to replace the timing chain cover and gasket along with the oil pan gasket since that seems like another time-consuming process. I am just hoping to save some time and money if I can fix it at home.
This is the first time I've been up there to really take a look around since we've owned the car (a family hand-me-down); needless to say these are not fun first surprises to find.
