Default 99 2.5 V6-PCM Communication Failed-Fix?

Hi,
Our 99 Sebring 2.5 V6 with like 130k miles is like missing now and the check engine light is on. I think I need to check and change the spark plugs. I just bought some new Bosch Iridium ones at Auto Zone to hopefully put in this weekend.

BUTThe OBD2 Scanner only shows the problem of "Powertrain Control Module-Communication Failed"...
Is this due to possibly a poor grounding strap or something else?

Anyone know what I should check to remedy this problem?

Thanks

Was this scanner previously able to read the PCM? Suggest trying another scanner or visiting an auto parts store and have them pull the codes as most will do if not busy.

Have you tried the 'key-dance' to pull the diagnostic codes. I believe the '99 displayed the codes in the instrument cluster, don't recall exactly where. 'Key-dance' is turning ignition key from the off position run-off-run-off-run within 5 seconds (run position not start position). Any diagnostic codes will be displayed and end with 'done'.

Yes - the spark plugs were due to be replaced at 100,000 miles.

Also note the maintenance schedule calls for the timing belt be replaced at 100,000 miles and it is suggested the water pump be replaced at the same time as it is driven by the timing belt but is more preventative than required.

No this is the first time to use this scanner on the car. It’s a fairly good scanner, an XTOOL ANYSCAN A30M.
But I will have to try the auto store’s scanner like you said and the ignition key flipping, you mentioned that I’ve never heard of.

Ok yes spark plugs are probably overdue.
I believe the timing belt has already been done. I’ll check the records.

*Do you know if it’s a zero interference engine as in the valves will get bent if the timing belt breaks?!?
