Default 99 sebring jxi electrical problem

My car is having serious problems. The battery has a good charge but wont start. It doesnt even turn over, However all other electrical equipment on car works great. Wont take a jump either. One day started it up and nothing worked(radio, heaters, lights, windshield wipers,) So I pulled over and bumped the gear selector a bit and then everything started working again. Then i get home and shut it off, took key out and it still was running. So i had to put key back in and jiggled it around to get it to shut off. any ideas? It wont do anything as far as starting now.

There's a mechanical cable that runs between the shift lever and the key switch. It's an interlock that prevents removing the key until the car is in park. It also is part of what prevents starting in gear. Sounds like either that cable is out of adjustment or your ignition key switch is totally out of whack, or maybe both. There is a procedure for adjusting the cable but I'm not aware of whether the switch can be adjusted or whether replacement is the only option. Maybe another poster will have had some experience with that.

You might want to have your VIN checked by Chrysler to see if both fixes for the neutral interlock have been performed. You might be able to have the dealer fix it as part of that recall.

Probably not an issue with the key cylinder or the shifter cable ignition switch seems more likely. It's possible that bumping the shifter jarred the ignition switch via the cable which is why that seems related. The ignition switch is of course activated by the key cylinder. Another possibility would be that the switch is OK and there is a problem with the connector to the switch or the wire harness in the column. First thing I would do is take off the steering column trim and give the ignition switch, connector wiring a wiggle to see if it changed anything. From there you'd need a multimeter and a diagram to test the switch to see if the outputs are right for each position.
