Default Cam sensor repair question

I have a 2000 Sebring Lxi2d and was recently told that my cam sensor was "fading" and could go at any time. The mechanic said that in order to fix it I would need to have the distributor replaced since the cam sensor is inside it. Another mechanic said that in fact the cam sensor could be replaced without replacing the entire distributor.

Advice?

Is there a way to replace the cam sensor without bucking up for a new distributor? If so, how? If not, why not?

Thanks much. Any help is greatly appreciated.
