Default overheating problem

I have a 2005 Chrysler Sebring Sedan Limited. When I turn on my heat, my car overheats. I was told that I needed a thermostat, but I dont know. Can anyone tell me what to do as far as getting this problem fixed? Or tell me how to fix it myself to save money?

a broken or bad thermostat will not cause the car to over heat when u turn on the heat.

Its a 2.7L DOHC 24 Valve. It has roughly 107,400 miles. And when it overheats it loses coolant. Do I need a thermostat?

There are many possible causes of overheating. Leaves and debris clogging the radiator, collapsed radiator hose, bad thermostat, coolant leak, inoperative fan(s), plugged radiator core, blown head gasket, wrong or weak or old coolant, bad radiator cap, etc, etc.
Check what you can. If you can't figure it out by yourself, get someone who knows what he's doing to look the system over. There are tests that can be run (coolant specific gravity, pressure tests) that can rule out some things. Nobody can do that over the internet.
