Default Solenoid pack or range senor?

Hey there, new to this forum but not forums. I have been amazed in the past at the help that is so freely given. Here goes; I have the same problem that alot of member have experienced. Hard down shifting in an '02 Sebring 2.7L automatic. My Question, is a solenoid pack the same as a range senor? Front right hand side of transmiision, orange bolt on plug with appox. 8-10 pins. Everyone on the forum refers to solenoid packs nobody uses the term Transmission range finder.
Thanks for any usful information.
