Willl reducing heat help my 2.7 ??
Bought a 2002 Sebring recently with 19K miles.
I didn't do enough research on this 2.7 engine and now Im fearful.
The vehicle is wonderful and I routinely get 30-32mpg highway so I am pleased with the performance. This vehicle sees 20% city, 80% highway driving. Weve put 1000miles on itsince we got it 2 weeks ago and absolutely loveit.
I find conflicting info on searches when/if the oil sludge and passage issues were resolved in the 2002 model but the close poximity, lack of airflow I am wondering if reducing the heat by wrapping the exhaust and possibly coating the manifolds would help in this regard.
The first thing I did when I got it home was change the oil and put in mobil 1 5w30 with an AC PF13 filter. I've never had a problem with the AC filters and have been using them forever.
I maintain my vehicles properly and always change oil at 3000 mi. I have a 2002 Dakota w/119K and a 2003 Durango with 157K both with the 4.7 and they have been bulletproof. And NO SLUDGE
I want to do everything I can to properly maintain this vehicle and from what I have read it appears thatthe recommended maintenance is crucial, andkeeping the engine heat down will help.
Any other tips or information I can do to attempt to keep this motor alive?

Regular changes of a full synthetic oil have been the most help in avoiding a sludge issue if one isn't already present. Check the top of the heads by pulling the valve covers for the easiest verification that you don't already have this problem.

I too suggest Moblie-1 full synthetic (all I use)... You can go 5000 miles without any harm or sludge build-up.... I have proof of conv. oil and lack of changes what happens with this motor (previous owner/my boss). There also has been may parts improvements... oil pump, pick-up screen, timing set... but as long as you maintain it, you won't need to worry about that stuff for some time. Something to remember... your water pump is internal, so if you ever notice "milk" in the oil.... it is either that or a head gasket. Don't keep driving....
