Default What is that extra empty box on the cold air intake tube for?

Recently I've been looking at replacing the cold air intake system with an upgraded one and noticed on my 2006 Chrysler 300 SRT8, there is this additional box, which does not seem to serve any purpose, off the side of the air intake tube, right before the mass air flow sensor and EGR valve. None of the after-factory air intake systems have this additional empty box with them, and even the later 300C, Charger and Challenger models do not include it. The later cold air intake systems appear to go from the intake filter box, through a straight tube, and then directly into the EGR valve. Does anyone else know if that extra box is an absolute must-have for this model and does it server any purpose?

Nothing more than a "resonator" engineers decided to smooth out sound and pressure waves in the intake system, for reasons only known to them.
Not needed
