Default code p0440 and gascap

Monday my engine light came on and i got a code p0440 today my gascap light came on. I replaced the gascap today and cleared the gascap message but the next time i started it the message came back. Could the p0440 code and gascap message be connected? What step should i take next?

sbuyce1,

Welcome to the forum.
Gascap issues can set MIL and EVAP code p0440 however there are other components in the system which could fault as well producing the code.
I would get your vehicle to a Chrysler dealer rather than guess at part replacement moving forward.

Check your evap hoses -- one is likely cracked, causing the code to keep coming up. It could also be the EVAP can or a few other items, but the hoses are the most likely (and cheapest) culprit.

If you're not comfortable troubleshooting this on your own, I recommend finding a competent, local mechanic. The very LAST thing I'd do is "get your vehicle to a Chrysler dealer" out of warranty unless you like spending lots of $$.

jphanks,

Welcome to the forum.
I'd recommend the same course of action as with sbuyce1, despite some other comments recommending a local mechanic rather than a Chrysler dealer.
A Chrysler trained Technician knows these vehicles inside and out and have FAR more resources available to identify and resolve an issue.
An independent mechanic would likely be able to resolve the issue as well...eventually.
All the best.

Respectfully, it's an evap issue...we're not rebuilding a transmission here. I understand you work for Chrysler and you're rooting for the home team, but c'mon.

Put them side by side, assume they're both competent (dealer mechanics are NOT always good at their jobs either), and the only difference will be a lighter wallet.
