Default Warranties

I just purchased a 2007 Aspen Hemi 4x4 w/ 48k miles.. Is it a good idea to get the bumper to bumper wrap around package for a warranty for $1500 which covers it for the next 30k miles? Or are their other deals out there that are better. This is offered though Century Service which the dealer recommended. It is a certified vehicle so it has power train till 6 yrs or 80k and 3 month 3k mile bumper to bumper. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

3rd party (not the manufacturer) extended warranties are seldom a good idea. The dealer is excited to sell it to you because they stand to make a substantial profit on it, even though they know that there are all sorts of limitations on what is covered in most 3rd party warranties. Take a close look at the paperwork - I bet you'll find that there are many exclusions to the warranty.

My opinion is that you'd be way better off putting that $1,500 in the bank in case something goes wrong mechanically during the next 30k miles. Chances are good that the $1,500 will cover what goes wrong, and you don't have to worry about exclusions, getting approval for the work, etc. if something does happen. You're basically thinking about giving someone your money and then asking permission to use it if something goes wrong.

You already have powertrain coverage through Chrysler, so you have some assurance that a major repair will be covered. Of course, I'm not telling you what to do - this is just the way my wife and I approached this same decision when we bought our Aspen used, which has been pretty much perfect for 25k miles now.

I am still getting warranty pitches for extended warranty on the the 05 Cadillac DHS we bought 3 years ago, and now it is starting all over again on the the 08 Aspen we recently purchased.

They all find their way to the shredder, that strip cut shredder makes them into great fire starters for the fire place or the frequent brush fires with the misc. limbs I frequently pick up and what I trim from the trees around our two acre yard. I love to listen to the whistle and popping of the damn willow brush!!!

I used to sell at a new car dealership, and the dealership set the price of the extended warrranties based on what they thought they could get out of the customer. Sometimes, they made more profit from the extended warranty than from the sale of the vehicle itself. I saw warranties that cost the dealer $350.00 sold for $1500.00 or more. Since then I have never bought any type of extended warranty on ANYTHING, and have never been sorry.
