Take the four screws out of the FCM, unplug it and plug it back in. The problem is where the 2 pieces mate together, it's really difficult to pin down which is the culprit.

Default FCM removal

Is it necessary to disconnect the battery and will unplugging and replugging the FCM require something to be reset with a scanner or to clear codes. thanks very much.

Yeah disconnect the battery before you do it. It will set a bunch of codes if you don't. No scanner needed.
