Default 3.8L 06 Pacifica AC clutch/compressor problem

I have an o6 pacifica with 3.8L engine. My AC slowly died recently. Air gradually got warmer and warmer until it eventually stopped getting cold at all. I checked the refridgerant charge and it's good. I noticed that before it stopped working completely, the compressor would only cycle for a few seconds and shut off for about 20 or so seconds then on again for a couple seconds and cycle like that all the time when the AC switch was on. Then the clutch stopped engaging completely. I can hear that the clutch is making a noise like the clutch plate touching the clutch but it's not engaged. It apparently has melted some of the clutch material as I can see it has splattered around the area of the clutch, and at one time I could smell the material burning . The smell is not evident anymore but the noise remains. Clutch will do nothing when the AC is turned on. The system has no leaks and was working great before it started to die. I watched the compressor just before it stopped completely and when it stayed on for 30 seconds or more, the air got cold but it rarely stayed on that long just before it died. So does anyone know if the clutch can be replaced without having to replace the whole compressor and are the parts available from a dealer or AC specialist? I have a Chrysler repair manual that says it can be done. Anyone here ever do this? I suspect I may have another problem that caused the clutch to operate erratically before it died. Any suggestions as to what may have caused that?? Any replies would be appreciated.
