Default Check Engine not Gas cap as code says

Went to Autozone after my check engine light came on. Code said gas cap, so I went to a dealer to get the correct one. Reset code by disconecting battery. Light came back on and code still says gas cap. What else could this be??

Autozone employees are not automotive techs. You can have them retrieve codes for you, and that is fine. The code was probably an emissions code, and the gas cap thing is only one of many that can give such a code. You probably have a P0455 code.

Smile The Check Engine light went out

Went to take my Pacifica to see what the actual code was when they told me my gas cap needed replaced. In the meantime, I cleaned out the butterfly because my throttle was sticking and I unplugged and plugged in all of my vacuum hoses. Anyway with my hood up all day and working on other stuff, my battery ran down not all the way but enough where I could not start the car. Jumped it off and the check engine light went out. Drove 165 miles and still out. Thanks for your inputs anyway.

The odometers numbers are replaced with the word gas cap. I have that’ same problem today.

You need to have it scanned for codes and report back the codes to us.

There are codes that can mean gas cap, "and" other things.
The gas cap is the most common fix, but some fixes can be a couple hundred bucks.

This orginal post was 9 years ago back there they did not have one teh dash gas cap now they do. Its a general thing for people to leave the gas cap off and this tells them they did.

Also a common cause for this is a broken evap return line on the fuel pump. Can't establish a vacuum to pull vapors back into the tank, so the ECU throws a code, p0440 or P0442.
