Default Transmission fluid leak after service

My local indepenent mechanic changed my transmission fluid & filter yesterday - and he said towatch forany leaks. There were some pretty good leaks onmy garage floor this morning. I spoke to him and he said the factory filter was a "silicon" type and thought he would use a "cork" filter when I return the car. He also mentioned that it was a "bear" to change. Any ideas? he should have stuck with the RTV and not use a gasket.
