1,000 plus mile trip
The reality however is that a system developed in the early days of the CAN-BUS could well continue to be used for all we know. Fiat for an example had two decades from the early 80's where they continued to count the metric mile. The change from mechanical to computer BUS were well known for it, most of the UK fiat owners and repairers on these Islands knew for decades they had always to convert from metric to UK-gallons for the reality of their MPG.
Well its been a good trip so far, weather has been great. We drove till the low fuel light came on, this is the way I am in most cases but wanted to see what the most I could get out of a tank. I got 525 miles and I am not sure how much gas in in these tanks when that light comes on, does anyone know? Oh yeah, cruise control was set at 68 mph through this whole run.

- motorway limit is 70MPH, We have [SPECS] averaging speed cameras on motorway & dual carriageways
- cars - only about 12% exceed the limit
- LGV's had the highest average free flow speed across all road types, reaching 69 mph on motorways
- so our average free flow speed across all road types would be 70 ish MPH, and higher I suspect for non SPECS carriageways
You are lucky - I've long [about 60 years] considered the maximum speed limits ridiculous. There are many examples where the 70MPH limit should be 40MPH and many many other quiet & empty roads / motorways / periods where the 70MPH limit should be 80MPH +. A statistical modelling report I remember reading a couple of years ago said that moving from 70MP to 80MPH would result in 25 extra deaths, so the increase was never implemented. If that's the case then reducing the limit to 10MPH would save an extra 150 lives per year, and that's not going to happen.
My view is the limit that was set in 1965 with sidevalve engines, no heaters, no windscreen washers, old concrete roads, unlit roads, no cats eyes, unmanaged, and unsafe is a ludicrous limit to apply to 2014 with modern cars and modern road infrastructure.

On our Interstates the standard is 65 mph, some sections in different states have 70, some out to our west have 80.
QinteQ, at the other hand I've been to the UK several times in the past few years and when I look at the maintenance state of UK roads, the UK should lower the maximum speed to 50 mph 
In the Netherlands the maximum speed is set to 130 km/h (81 mph) but every where roads run near agglomerations its lowered to 100 km/h (61 mph) which is almost everywhere in the centre and the west LOL.
Luckily I live in the east where its still 81 mph and I only have to drive 30 miles to get on the German autobahn where there is no limit at all.
Recently I had to test a new motorbike and I could adjust my personal speed record on 285+ km/h (177+ mph) It was a little higher but at that speed I was afraid to take my eyes of the road to look at the tacho
