2.5 CRD Timing Belt
Did you mark the positions of the cam and crank sprockets before you took the old belt off?
If so, then turn the engine over 2 revolutions by hand, the marks should line up again on the crank and cam sprockets.
If you haven't marked them up, and you don't have the locking pins then you're brave. But you could turn the engine over by hand slowly a couple of revolutions to make sure its not so grossly out that valves touch pistons.
Assuming you can turn it over by hand, then you could try to start it....if it runs like a pig, then the timing is out....if it won't start at all.....then the timing is out.

I did mark them, but when I took the belt off there was naturally more tension on one side, thus I had to turn the crank slightly back to get the belt on the correct tooth. Anyway, I made an alignment pin and double checked everything. It all seems fine, runs fine, but now there is a slight ticking sound that is only present when cold. As the engine warms up it goes away???
The timing procedure on this thing is complete garbage. According to the manual you crank the engine to tdc, then an additional 90*. Install timing pins etc. The really stupid part is the 90*. There is no mark on the block to line up the crank with. Thus its up to the technician to eyeball 90* Am I missing something or is it really this completely ridiculous.

Not sure about your ticking sound.....As far as I know the 90* btdc thing is only a precaution should the cams inadvertantly jump under spring pressure....valves won't hit the pistons then.
The full procedure in the chrysler manual is indeed a nonsense. If you follow it to the letter you have to remove the starter motor, alternator etc to get all the locking pins in. Complete overkill when replacing a belt. However I did use a universal tool to lock the cams together.

Hi
I'm trying to pluck up courage to change the timing belt on my 2.8cdr voyager (it's already a bit over the 60k) but things aren't quite clear to me.
Is the crank pulley keyed to the crankshaft or is it keyless stretch bolt fixing like a ford zetec? If its keyless then I'm worried about losing the timing of the crankshaft, I understand the cams are locked and cant move, but the crank could? The tippexed timing mark is on the pulley you have taken off?
I think I am misunderstanding something, really appreciate it if someone could explain a bit more.
I cant get my hands on a manual so torque settings would really help.
I've done an 8 valve vauxhall timing belt, very easy. I chickened out on doing a 1.25 fiesta zetec engine, but having seen it done I'd be happy to do one now.
