Just an update with regards to costs so far (no, it's not back on the road yet).
Initial parts (everything needed including 8 rockers and tappets but not the water pump) approx £450.
Water pump £185
Timing alignment tool £65
Injector Puller £301
So a grand already an the guys labour to add yet.
I'm getting scunnered now, but I couldnt have replaced the car for these costs, and I'm too far in to stop now.
Once I know the total costs, i'll decide whether to sell the puller and timing kit OR watch ebay for another one with the timing belt gone.

there is a company in camberley called J.N.L engineering they are VM specialists i got all my parts for doing my head gasket they are very reasonable on price and very helpful 01276 63278 i dealt with a guy called shane
got to do mine again as it needs the head replacing believe it has craked or gone porus around the inlet ports
not a bad job really took me a day and a bit to remove clean and refit
just taking the cam cover off is not too bad remove timing belt also take the wiper/scuttle panel off (4 bolts 4 nuts )
good luck

belt may be complete but if engine was frozen, may have slipped round on the crank ,done top end damage and now no compression,id get a compression tester on it.

yep agree with pestilance could well have stripped the teeth off the belt also a belt that is old would do this too
get the cover off and take a closer look

i think i would go for the compresion test,or whip the starter out, turn the crank round to timing mark, lock the flywheel up with a bolt,,then check the the cams are alligned with locking pins, doing revolutions on the belt wont tell u if timing is on,unless there is marks from previous change

but if it is fast winding, then there deff no compression.

if its a high interference engine,3 teeth out would be all thats needed

What mileage is on the car?

Top end damage seems likely. Get an injector puller and get the rocker cover off. The pullers are expensive but come up on e-bay from time to time and you can sell it on when you're finished with it.

At least then you'll know what you're dealing with. If the belt slipped, then it will have broke the rockers, often thats all that breaks on a VM engine. If you're lucky it will only have broke the intake rockers.

Oh, and if that is the case, as pestilance says, you'll also need a set of timing pins to set the timing. There are marks on the cam sprockets but they are meaningless and don't line up with anything.
