Default 2.5 CRD VERY Noisy gearbox

Hi peeps, ive searched the forum and have seen a few posts to problems with the Gearbox on the Voyagers, I have a 2003 which I bought with 83000 miles on with a noisy box, the problem was described as a dual mass flywheel rattle, after research I have found the flywheel to be standard, I have just driven across France from the South to move back to the UK, I did this trip 5 times up and back, half way through the last trip the noise got considerably worse, could be towing a maxed out four wheel box trailer didn't help!!

It now has 100000 miles on the clock, not a heavy mileage, I also have previous Service History to back up service intervals etc, however I can not find any proof the Gearbox lube was changed, (I changed this when I first got it due to the noise)

When the clutch is pushed the noise disappears, now it has developed a very bad vibration/judder when reversing.

Can someone who has experience of this please tell me what the cure is?? I am quite prepared to rebuild the gearbox if I can obtain the parts. Ohter wise the gearchange is very good.

Thank you in advance.

I'm surprised you've took the chance that many times. Are you the one that stays on the south of France. Can't imagine gearbox damage would last that long so I'm going for a damaged clutch with possibly one of the fingers broken off and dancing around inside.
But disappears when pressed, well could be holding the part.. Judder and vibe as to clutch. Whatever its going to be gearbox out.

Hi goggs, yes we have been in the south of France for 6 years, looks like we got back back just as the poo is going to hit the fan re the EU, I wasn't too concerned re the gearbox noise as it was liveable, but now it is making noises that make me think its doing itself harm, so time for a look, I was hoping that someone who was in the same boat had actually found the cause.

We bought the Voyager as a stopgap but I've come to like the thing, weve spent little on it but the driving position is excellent for my back, and the Diesel is extremely strong.

Welcome back to good old Blighty John.
Have you tried coasting in neutral, first with the clutch engaged and then with the clutch disengaged?

Not the Channel Tunnel I hope, that wouldn't prove anything
The little knowledge I have on gearboxes it sounds like it might be the layshaft.

Probably cheaper to get a second hand box. I can't imagine what Chrysler would want for gearbox bits, even if you could get hold of them. I can recommend this Chrysler breakers: Chrysler Breakers The Chrysler,Jeep & Dodge breakers.
