Default 2008 T & C, Oil Change Warning System

The "Change Oil" light now comes on when I start the car, flashes 3 times, then goes out. The oil was last changed about 3,400 miles ago.
My question is this:
Does this warning come on based simply on mileage or is there a sensor that analyzes the condition of the oil?
I used to change oil at 3,000 miles regardless but am reading more and more that quality oil doesn't need to be changed that frequently under normal driving conditions.
What say you?

Default Oil Monitoring

Thanks for the quick response. I searched through the owners manual and couldn't find the answer. Guess I didn't look hard enough. Also tried a search of past threads before posting my question. Came up empty there as well.
Long story short,
Thanks for the response, and Merry Christmas!

Service manual

The change oil indicator gives an indication to the vehicle operator when a duty-cycle algorithm contained within the software of the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) (also known as the Engine Control Module/ECM) determines that a recommended oil change interval has been attained. This indicator is controlled by the instrument cluster logic circuit based upon cluster programming and electronic messages received over the Controller Area Network (CAN) data bus from the PCM.

Owners manual
Oil Change Required
Your vehicle is equipped with an engine oil change
indicator system. The Oil Change Required message will
flash in the EVIC display for approximately 10 seconds
after a single chime has sounded to indicate the next
scheduled oil change interval. The engine oil change
indicator system is duty cycle based, which means the
engine oil change interval may fluctuate dependent upon
your personal driving style
