Default Aftermarket Stereo Factory DVD compatability

I have a new to me 02 T & C with the factory DVD system. I want to replace the headunit with an aftermarket one with BT, and Ipod controls. Does anyone know if you will lose your sound in the speakers if you switch out the head unit? Or if it is possible to do so? I don't know enough about these setups to know how depedent they are on each other to function properly.

simply put, I would like to change the HU out without it affecting the DVD audio out of the speakers.

Not sure it will work. I am not sure what they use in the 02 for DVD but in the 05 it would be hard to do. Why not just change the entire system? Is your DVD player separate or part of the screen? You need to check all the signals that the factory system puts out so you will need the factory wiring diagram. Do you headphones? this plays into it as well. If it would work to some extent, you would most likely lose the functionality of the head unit to control the DVD player and you would have to rely on the remote.... if it has one.
