Default Catastrophic Trans failure. 2005 T&C

My 2005 Town and Country with a 3.8 L engine has 154,000 miles on it. Just getting broke in since I recently retired a 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan with 264,000 miles only due to the rust. Still had original engine and trans. So I was very disappointed when my 2005 dropped the trans. Come to find out the main Transfer shaft broke. The trans shop said they have never seen one. Then the way is broke looks like better than 60% of the diameter of the shaft has been cracked for some time and the last 40% finally went. Has anyone else had one of these break? I understand things fail but this part shouldn't have failed.

First I've heard of that specific part breaking while surfing forums for years. Usually it's the planetary gears. Sure doesn't mean it hasn't. Most post their tranny died so had it replaced and don't give specifics. Tranny failure at 154000 miles unfortunately, isn't unusual.
