Unhappy transmission catastrophic failure

we have a 96 chrysler town and country mini-van and recently we had a problem, while driving down the interstate, we exited through an off ramp and as soon as we dropped the gas pedal there was a sharp jerk and a loud bang causing the engine to stall and a great amount of oil spray all over the underside of the van and the road, it would not go into gear anymore and the transmission was leaking oil badly, while wenching it up onto a flatbed later, the wheels locked up so we figured we would try to flip around gears to see if it would break loose, it went into drive but it sounded like gravel inside the tranny and we found more oil and a large hole in the transmission case with chunks of cast iron all over the flatbed, any idea what would cause a failure like this???

I would say the planetary gear sun annulus gear gave way and the springs pushed all the pressure forward that is what U have now.
