Cold Heaters
hi ive got a 2004 grand voyager 2.5crd and the heaters are freezing! the temp gauge on goes up to 1/4 and the cooling fans intermittently come on when I start up? any help advice would be most appreciated
- I'm assuming its freezing at any [low/med/high] fan setting ...........
- assuming you've checked the water level
- you should see the water being pumped [yes you can] in pulses into the translucent header tank
- that temp gauge should be at just under 1/2 summer & winter
- a knackered stat is a good bet
- a stat will always break [by design] in an open position
- a stat on these cars is a pig to do, a workaround way of doing the same thing is here
- here is a whole separate thread in 'winterizing' including essential winter air dams
Have a read of the two threads and get back with questions.
- no idea, anyone else comment ?

The workaround (stat in the upper radiator hose pipe) is a much easier and much cheaper way to fix this. I replaced the actual stat at the back of the engine - expensive and the only clear advantage is that you have an opportunity to clean out the egr valve and the egr out pipe.
Clearly then if the Temp. Gage does not go about mid-way there is a thermostat problem which is quite common. It is not easy to change, it is at the back of the engine on the driver's side, but can be done. I expect it would take about 6 hours the first time. It is easier if the wipers and tray are removed first to gain a little better access. You should be able to buy a thermostat on eBay although the engine distributor, JNL Engineering in Camberley, Surrey (01276 63278 - Shane Simpson) is worth considering because there are at least 2 if not more different models depending on year.
I can strongly advice to use the "thermostat in tube replacement trick"
In my case it was the difference between a Chrysler thermostat of €150,- + 4 hour labour €200,- is a total cost of €350,-
Versus
Renault 5 thermostat in tube €12,- and 30 minutes DIY job. is a total cost of €12,-
I tested the new situation on a -5 Celsius long trip and a +12 Celsius long highway trip and my temperature behaves perfectly well now.

Had a view on You Tube yesterday and there is a video relating to the Voyager CRD alternative thermostat but its in a foreign language. Right enough their pointing to the green hose but instead of the Renault 5 thermostat like I've said they mention the Renault 9 thermostat. I have came across the picture of a hose fitted stat while browsing but at a loss at mo..
Looks like Renault 5 and 9 Stats are about the same. The 9 refers to Renault Petrol 1400cc 1981 on..
Renault 9 on left of box.
But whether 5 or 9 the stat most likely refers to the engine. Anyone got a manual on these cars so we can pinpoint if this stat is fitted in the hose.
