Default Help 2.8tdi

I've had an on going problem with my 2.8tdi GV. My GV has been cutting out and sometimes not restarting. The fault codes where P0190 and P0130, I took it to Lookers of Cardiff on the 18th December for the diagnostic computer. They could see the fault codes but told me they could see nothing wrong with it. After many phone calls made by me I eventually got to speak to the fitter. A bloke called Jason who told me that he's done a leak back test, tested the sensors, and can not find anything wrong. I got it back today 05/01/2015 and it drove ok on the way home from Cardiff. I used it to pick my kids up from school ran ok but when I tried to go shopping it is stalling at idle reves and is starting first time. The only code it is showing now is P0514 battery sensor falult. But at idle speed it feels like it's hunting. Could it be the in tank fuel pump. The revs are up and down at idle.
Any help please

What Year GV is it? There is a common fault on certain year GV's where the heater plug on the fuel filter housing melts and causes air to be sucked into the fuel which undoubtedly causes stalling, hesitation, lumpy idle etc. Chrysler have actually made an improved fuel filter housing and heater loom to rectify this problem. Does it just stall at idle or when you accelerate too? Could also be crank shaft sensor... have you tried cleaning the MAF sensor too. This is located on the pipe between the engine and air filter box. You need to clean it with spray MAF cleaner. If the MAF is dirty or faulty then it will be sending wrong air/fuel ratio signals to the engines computer which in turn can cause your symptoms.

Hi Nick
It's a 2005 2.8 LTD XS. It's had a new fuel filter housing, fuel pressure sensor, cam sensor, air pressure / boost sensor and a cam sensor. I've even got a lambda sensor for it from Germany which Ive got to fit.

are you sure it wasn't an 1130 fault code? as 0130 doesn't exist.

Assuming the filter and filter housing are now good and no leaking air then you are going to need to start with a 'scope on the fuel rail pressure sensor and see if a loss of pressure is causing it to cut out. If so, is it a gradual decrease from excessive leak back or a sudden drop from air getting in or the Fuel Control Actuator (M-PROP) failing.

It would be nice to know if the 0190 was active at the time it was scanned or historical. Did they check the wiring loom to the ECU?

Richard

Hi Richard.
Yes it was a P1130 code. When I talked to the fitter on the phone he said he had done a leak back test and it was ok. The way I'm thinking could it be the electric pump in the tank.
I know it's £280 from Lookers in Cardiff but if it fixes it it's worth it. But I don't want to waste money. As for the rest I don't know as the fitter did not seem to knowledgable for a specialist.
As I live in South Wales I'm going to have to take it to a diesel specialist.

Fitters FIT things, mechanics FIX things.

2.8's dont have a pump in the tank.

Get it to someone who can diagnose faults and not just swap parts outs.

If they say they are going to change a part, ask why and what tests they have done to prove it is defective? You may not understand the answer they give, but if they can't give an answer other than "the computer says it's faulty" or "it might be this" then go somewhere else

By the mention of Cardiff, I take it that you are in that part of the country? It's a bit far from me in Cambridgeshire

Regards
Richard

Ok guys I've gust got my GV Back from a local diesel specialist. When I took it to them and explained what was happening he said pop the bonnet so he could listen it it as it was all over the place at idle. After 10 seconds it cut out and he knew what was wrong with it. Bare in mind the Chrysler dealer had it for ages and could not find the fault. It turned out to be wiring broke. He traced the fault and repaired it in less than half a day and all it cost me was £75.
I'm a Happy Chappy now.
Thanks for all the help guys.

So it sounds like he's a mechanic after all
