Mine never did, much like the older Citroens. I just do it manually -- ho-hum.

GV 2.8 crd 2005.

I can buy a new indicator/wiper stalk unit off ebay for about £20 but I'm wondering if the problem is more to do with something broken off the steering wheel column that hits the indicator unit as its turned to cancel it rather than the internals of the unit itself.

I've had two Grand Voyagers (2001 2.5 CRD and 2007 2.8 CRD) and the indicators behave the same on both. When indicating right at a roundabout and you turn slightly left to start going round then the right indicator cancels. When indicating left, unless the turn is very sharp the left indicator doesn't cancel. I thought this was a problem with my first voyager but now think it is just the way it is. I'm used to flicking the indicators on again when turning right at a roundabout and off when turning left.

Is this similar to your problem or is it that your's never cancel?

Mine never cancel. On left turns it try's to cancel but doesn't quite catch. It's very easy to change, I saw a vid on you tube. A few screws that's all.

Mine (1) self cancel, in addition if you indicate to (2) change lane [tiny movement of steering wheel] you get a series of repeating warning 'beeps' to remind you to self cancel after about 30 seconds.
