In the 60's we had the first date of registration as a letter such as a 1965 Capri .. .. example a C reg

Then we had A - Z meaning a geographic location such as 'O' for Oxford 'P' for Preston and 'R' for Reading, the last of which was the 'Y' reg from 2001-2002 which was also the first of the new 'age identifiers' called a '51 Plate. Other examples here.

From 2001 -2004 or so there were a few confused years where you car was either / or for example a 'Y' reg Multipla was a 2001

The current age identifiers should run till 2051 - are you confused ? - I am confused myself !

- a 51 plate was a 2001-2002
- a 61 plate is a 2011-2012
- a 71 plate is a 2012-2022
- a 91 plate is a 2041-2042

- this system will have to change in 2051 when the numbers roll back to a 00 plate

Confused yet ? - if not you soon will be - I am confused myself !

You see when the old S T Y plate changed in 2002 ? remember ? we started issuing two different age identifiers per year for example the 'Y' reg Multipla was :

- a Y reg if it was issued between 1 March – 31 August, but a 51 plate if it was issued between 1 September – 28/29 February the same year
- a W reg Chrysler Voyager is brand new this year on a W plate

Your a good bloke Raptor 07, very helpful to all posters, if I were you I wouldn't even bother trying to work it out, just ask people who say 'S' plate T' plate or 'W' plate which year their car is - the odds are they are UK based.

Cool Better late than never

Wish i would've seen this thread yesterday! I have the same problem with my van, as well as the same questions about warranty coverage. Glad to see people lending an ear and a helping hand. Time for me to call chrysler today! Raptor was a big help!

Clockspring problems come up a lot on just about any forum for many manufacturers. Chrysler did the right thing in this case due to a mistake on the assembly line in the late 90s so issued two safety recalls, one for 96-97 vans and the other for 98-00 vans. Unfortunately, newer models are having similar problems but aren't covered under any recall.

QinteQ - Thanks for the "plate" explanation. I thought the Germans were the ones who liked to turn simple ideas into science projects. Regardless, I've bookmarked it for future reference.
